Atmospheric Circulation Drivers of Extreme High Water Level Events at Foggy Island Bay, Alaska

چکیده
The northern coast of Alaska is experiencing significant climatic change enhancing hazards from reduced sea ice and increased coastal erosion. This same region home to offshore oil/gas activities. Foggy Island Bay one along the Beaufort Sea with planned development that will need account for changing climate. High water levels impact infrastructure through erosion flooding hazards. In this study, 21 high level events exceeding top 95th percentile were identified at gauge in Prudhoe Bay, (adjacent Bay) over 1990–2018. All events, many non-extreme days elevated levels, associated strong westerly winds according station records. Storm systems generally found be a key driver downscaled reanalysis storm track data. A dynamically global climate model projection CMIP5 indicated wind may become more frequent as storms strengthen have longer durations by 2100 region. Coupled anticipated continued decline ice, experience next ~80 years.

Investigation of the atmospheric circulation anomalies associated with extreme rainfall events over the Coastal West Africa
This study investigates the atmospheric circulation associated with extreme rainfall events over the coastal West Africa. The rainfall data of this study were obtained from the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC), spanning from 1981 to 2010. The atmospheric datasets were also obtained from the ERA-Interim reanalysis. The study employed the Z-Index to categorize dry and wet years into...

متن کاملThe Impact of a Barrier Island Loss on Extreme Events in the Tampa Bay
Barrier islands characterize up to an eighth of the global coastlines. They buffer the mainland coastal areas from storm surge and wave energy from the open ocean. Changes in their shape or disappearance due to erosion may lead to an increased impact of sea level extremes on the mainland. A barrier island threatened by erosion is Egmont Key which is located in the mouth of the Tampa Bay estuary...
متن کاملExport and circulation of ice cavity water in Pine Island Bay, West Antarctica
Large sectors of the Antarctic ice sheet are vulnerable to increases in melting at the bases of fringing ice shelves, with melt rates depending on ocean temperatures and circulations in the sub-ice cavities. Here we analyze an oceanographic data set obtained in austral summer 2009 in Pine Island Bay, which is bounded in the east by the calving front of the Amundsen Sea’s fast-moving Pine Island...
متن کاملPersistent regimes and extreme events of the North Atlantic atmospheric circulation.
Society is increasingly impacted by natural hazards which cause significant damage in economic and human terms. Many of these natural hazards are weather and climate related. Here, we show that North Atlantic atmospheric circulation regimes affect the propensity of extreme wind speeds in Europe. We also show evidence that extreme wind speeds are long-range dependent, follow a generalized Pareto...
